Small Wonder: Finding Narrative Magic In The Mundane (Apr 17th-Jun 19th 2024)
When’s the last time you took stock of the tiny moments of magic that happen throughout the course of your day, your week, your life? The foam heart in your latte, the setting sun, the subway busker, the smell of your lover’s sweater, listening to your favorite song on repeat, the stranger who held your gaze in a non-creepy “soul contract” kind of way? Small Wonder is dedicated to the practice of tuning into what already exists around you and spinning narrative magic from the mundane. Each week we'll examine how different writers (Jesmyn Ward, Marguerite Duras, Mary Gaitskill, Emerald Santiaga, Marry Carr, Ashley Ford, Carvell Wallace and more) create poetry from the mini miracles of everyday life in their writing. Through generative exercises, morning pages, and writing prompts (sending letters to people you haven’t talked to in years, gratitude list-ing, waking with the sun), as well as just plain old earnest methods of emotional deep-diving, you’ll begin to see the world around you with a fresh set of eyes, explore the past with a brand new perspective, write over one thousand words a week, and develop a set of storytelling tools that will make your writing practice fun, approachable and way less scary than before. You'll also be assigned an Action + Accountability Partner to work with on a weekly basis, and have the option to attend weekly free-write sessions. Space is limited, first come, first served. No previous experience required. We offer sliding scale and comped spots for BIPOC. Email info@brooklynwriterscollective.com to inquire.
