Oh, Snap: How To Incorporate Photography Into Your Writing (Jan 16th-Mar 26th 2024)

$999.00 every month for 3 months

Are you sitting on an arsenal of old pictures that you don’t know what to do with? Are you obsessed by certain images from history, pop culture and/or your personal past that you’re dying to incorporate onto the page? In BWC’s first ever class of its kind we will dig deep into our personal histories, explore the narrative power of photographs and learn how to make writerly magic inspired by old ads, billboards, magazines, family photographs, Instagram posts, home videos, scrap books, chat books, zines, yearbooks and more. Through weekly prompts, readings, and Action Partner Activities, you will explore the story you’ve been wanting to write forever from a completely different angle, inspired by the works of Rachel Kushner, Ocean Vuong, Mary Gaitskill, Nick Flynn, Tom Junod, Luc Sante, Marguerite Duras, Carvell Wallace, Esme Wang, Sally Mann, Sharon Olds, and more. Please note: this is not a collage or photography class — we are strictly in the business of writing! The goal here is to approach our prose from a fresh and innovative angle — using photographs as a way to animate and elevate new and/or already existing memories and characters. Space is limited, first come, first served. No previous experience required.
