Story / Not Story - Wednesday Nights (Oct 9th -Nov 14th 2024)

$750.00 every month for 2 months

A return to the basics. This 6-week virtual Storytelling Workshop is for complicated people looking for a simple way to write their heart out. Each week you’ll be assigned a series of memory prompts and a long form essay about meaningful people/events from the past (both big and small) that left a mark. To hell with lectures, craft, structure and the end game! This workshop is for creatives who are willing to let go of results, clumsily weave hybrid forms and joyfully embrace a meaningful conversation between memory and imagination, past and present and the poetry that binds them. The goal is to connect to your deep flow state, abandon the bad voice in your head and find a more peaceful, expansive and purposeful way to engage with the page. We will read essays, short stories, poems, excerpts by Mary Gaitskill, Chloe Cooper Jones, Raven Leilani and more. Each week you will be asked to submit a short piece (1-3 pages) and several memory prompts.  You will also meet often with your Action Partner and keep a daily "UNjournal" designed to help you identify magic in the mundane. Workshops are facilitated  by Author Molly Rosen (The Cut, Love, Lust + Weddings For The Wild At Heart) and free-writes are led by Misha Sumar (Vermont School of The Arts, MFA) Each class will be capped at ten people. Our sliding scale options welcome a more diverse participation. If the cost of this course exceeds your financial capacity, please email info@brooklynwriterscollective.com and we will try our best to accommodate — if not this session, than a future one.
